Lucretius put forward the 'symmetry argument' against the fear of death. He argues that if one fears ultimate non-existence after death, one need only think of his non-existence before birth, which he probably does not fear. However, can one really look oneself in the mirror and reconcile the notion that his symmetrical reflection also does not exist, and therefore could simultaneously be his birth and death at the same time? Indeed, there is no need to fear death. It is only symmetry we should fear.
